Spirulina in Extruded Snacks: Pilot Test Plan

Spirulina in Extruded Snacks: Pilot Test Plan

Spirulina in an extruded snack should be assessed as a process-and-product change. A 2018 study developed an extruded snack with 2.6% Spirulina and measured composition, expansion, hardness, colour, water interaction, sensory response and microbiology. It reported that the pigment affected colour. This is a useful list of test areas, not a formula to copy across extruders.

Small benchtop food extruder produces puffed snack pieces with a subtle green tint.

Start from the control process

Document the base ingredients, moisture before extrusion, barrel temperature profile, screw configuration, feed rate and die. Run a control without Spirulina under the same conditions. Extrusion depends on both the raw mix and equipment settings.

Food developer compares the colour and texture of green spirulina snack samples.

What to observe at the line

Keep notes on feeder behaviour, powder dispersion, torque or pressure if recorded, die flow, strand consistency, expansion, density, breakage, colour after extrusion and moisture after cooling. If colour is a key objective, set a target and a consistent measurement method.

Check finished-snack quality

Measure the attributes your customer cares about: bite, crunch, flavour, aftertaste, seasoning, oil pickup and storage performance. Use a controlled sensory protocol instead of relying on one person’s impression. If the product will be packed, test it in the intended packaging and storage conditions.

Keep the paper’s limits in view

The cited study used a particular Spirulina strain, formula and extrusion process. Its 2.6% level is a study condition, not an industry standard. It does not verify AimGrow material or establish a label claim for your product.

Agree on specifications with production and quality teams, then request current supplier documentation. AimGrow’s bulk spirulina listing can start that discussion. Complete your own pilot and finished-product validation before a commercial run.

The cited 2018 paper is primary research on one extruded-snack formula. It should guide test design, not replace process validation.
