How Is Our Factory Expanding Phycocyanin Production?

How Is Our Factory Expanding Phycocyanin Production?

Our factory is preparing the next phase of its phycocyanin production expansion. We are investing in additional extraction and purification capacity to support growing demand for high-color-value phycocyanin. The project is progressing in stages, and timing remains subject to construction, commissioning, and qualification.

The planned expansion includes additional production space and an extraction and purification line for high-color-value phycocyanin. We expect to bring the new line into operation after construction, equipment installation, commissioning, and quality qualification are complete. Until then, planned capacity should not be interpreted as currently available supply.

Why are we investing in additional capacity?

Food and beverage manufacturers are reviewing color options as product formulations evolve. In April 2025, the U.S. FDA and HHS announced an industry transition initiative for six remaining certified petroleum-based food dyes, with a target of the end of 2027. FD&C Red No. 3 follows separate regulatory deadlines. The initiative should not be described as a blanket ban on all synthetic dyes by the end of 2026. See the FDA’s 2025 announcement.

Color-additive permissions are specific to the substance, food category, and conditions of use. FDA issued a final order in February 2026 to expand the permitted use of spirulina extract as a color additive in foods generally, subject to stated exceptions. After objections and hearing requests, FDA delayed the order’s effective date pending final action on the objections. The delay notice says it does not change FDA’s safety determination; the expanded use should not be treated as currently effective while the objection process is pending. Review the FDA order and the Federal Register delay notice.

Phycocyanin and food color application research

For manufacturers, this means evaluating each intended application against the current authorization for the specific color additive. Phycocyanin is not a universal, automatically authorized replacement for every synthetic color or every food use.

How is our factory phasing the expansion?

Our factory is expanding in phases. The first phase has increased production capability, and the next phase will add further extraction and purification capacity once the new line has been installed, commissioned, and qualified. Actual output will depend on production readiness, operating conditions, product mix, and customer requirements.

We will share progress as each milestone is completed. Actual output will depend on facility readiness, equipment qualification, operating conditions, product mix, and customer requirements.

How will raw-material supply support the project?

We are developing our Spirulina supply chain to support the planned production expansion. As cultivation and processing capacity grows, we will continue to verify operational readiness, traceability, and ingredient quality through implementation and routine quality checks.

What should customers and partners watch next?

The key milestones are construction progress, line commissioning, product qualification, and demonstrated consistency in color value and quality. We will also continue to assess regulatory requirements for each intended market and use. Planned capacity alone does not establish current supply, a guaranteed price, or authorization for every application.

At our factory, we view this expansion as a long-term investment in phycocyanin production and Spirulina supply. We will share further updates as new production capacity progresses from planning to verified operation.

Project descriptions in this article reflect our current manufacturing plans; timing and output remain subject to construction, commissioning, and qualification. This article discusses food-color applications, not clinical health benefits.
